all sorts of lawsuits so corporations always prefer to recall to save money
Yes, the government can step in and force a recall if there is a dangerous product on the market and their is evidence that the product is defective or has some other safety issue such as containing dangerous chemicals. Cars are just like toys with lead paint or defective baby cribs that injure a baby or cause death. We have laws that set standards on how things are made, what they can and cannot contain and what safety standards they must meet. If a product proves to consistently cause a high rate of injuries or deaths or a problem is identified that could potentially create a dangerous situation then the government can step in if the manufacturer doesn’t take steps to deal with the problem themselves. In fact, companies have a time limit of 5 days to report such problems they discover themselves to the US government.
Had their not been recalls there would have been all sorts of lawsuits and their likely will be regardless.
What would have happened is exactly what DID happen to my 2002 Rav 4. It had a design flaw in the computer that caused it to try to shift into two gears at once between 2nd and 3rd, destroying my transaxle. A recall for a 15-cent computer card problem could have saved a $4000 transmission.
Toyota can kiss my ass.
The Government has it within their mandate to force any manufacturer to issue a recall. It rarely, if ever, comes to that.
For toyota it would have been business as usual. –Build cars that kill people…collect the money…build more cars that kill people…collect the money…..build more cars that kill people….and collect more money. And all the while…Toyota owners would keep saying….OMG my Toyota is just wonderful!
They actually would be like any other car maker… In all reality, other manufactorers have had numorous issues of cars accelerating out of control. You just do not hear about it because they are not being investigated yet. Little did you know, those type of pedals are in most new cars anyway and they all have had a fair share of issues. Take Nissan, they have had customer complaints just like Toyota with uninteded accelleration over and over just not enough to prompt and investigation or an “official” recall. Trust me, this is much bigger than just Toyota people. Open your eyes!
