The dairy industry is a huge media profit machine, which means we receive only hear what the milk producers want us to hear through TV, radio, and print media. We even see dairy and sugar resting high on the US recommended food pyramid. (Industry has no scruples.)
A large-scale study of over 17,000 women shows that those women who drank two or more glasses of milk each day (versus one or less) had lower bone density and more hip fractures. There is speculation that proteins in milk may deplete calcium from bones. The study conclusion was that milk is not the best source of calcium. Milk is not an essential food, which is good because, there are many lacto intolerant people and many people have allergies to the many proteins in milk. The fat milk is also dangerous and can lead to cancers, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Milk is also suspected in causing diabetes in young adults. Cow milk is ideal for calves and dangerous to many humans. In the US, most cows are injected with genetically modified bovine growth hormones and antibiotics. The growth hormones are suspected to cause early puberty an weight gain in humans. The antibiotics lead to strains of bacteria that are resistant.
I cannot speak for Dr. McDougall specifically, but there are many other respected professionals who disparage milk/dairy as a food product.
