It comes from working in a factory, because the labor had uniforms that were blue and ahd blue colars. and management had suits or white shirts that identified them as management.

    My understanding is that it came about as a slang term used between workers and management. White collar being the people who wore white shirts and ties and the blue collar used to be for the laborers who wore work uniforms.(people use to dress for work) They actually bought “work clothes”.
