Hello R&P
Some of you may know, I don’t like Leonard Cohen {sorry to all his fans, I just don’t ‘get’ him}, and I particularly can’t stand the song ‘Hallelujah’ – it was played to death here in Britain after the winner of one of those TV shows recorded it.
Anyway, last night I watched the coverage of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, and ‘Hallelujah’ was performed by K.D. Lang. OMG! I was actually able to listen to the song right through and quite enjoy it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_NpxTWbovE&fmt=18
{there isn’t a video from the ceremony up yet}
So, have you ever had cause to reassess your opinion of a song, singer / band, album or whatnot?
BQ : Did you watch the opening ceremony?
If so, what was your favourite part? = mine was the “Fall” fiddle section…
* * * * * * * * *
Yes, there were several humourous moments, such as:
‘spot the lip-sync singers’ {or in the case of the first one ‘out of sync’}!
The fiddling devil and his shadow – were they supposed to be un-syncronised? If they were, it looked rather odd…
Name that musician – the BBC commentry team were talking right over Loreena McKennitt, and made no mention of her presence {it was funny to me because having seen Sarah McLachlan I thought “Now, all they need is Loreena…”!}
‘Lady in the blue dress’ = Nelly Furtado
{I had no idea she was Canadian}

Oh yeah!
Every time I see a face of the singer or band member(s), the magic of the music is instantly lost on me. It’s weird when I accompany the sudden change in taste with the disappointment of attaching me music with the personality of someone else.
I think I mentioned this before, but when I first heard “The Musical Box”, I thought, “What’s this garbage? Why does everyone focus on their old stuff instead of their Phil Collins stuff?”. Seriously. That’s what I thought. I couldn’t STAND it.
And now, here I am, and Genesis is my favorite band.
BQ: Nope. Sorry.
One of my favourite bands released their second album and it was quite a different to their fist and i liked it but weren’t too keen then I saw them live at a festival and fell inn love with the album and now I prefer it more than their first.
Yeah…I’ve never been a fan of Leonard either. God knows I’ve tried…
KD Lang has a great voice…I’ve been a fan for years. She’s from Edmonton, and later Consort Alberta Canada, which is just a stone throw away from where Greeneyes and I live…before her fame, I used to see her playing local bars/clubs here back in the 80′s with her ‘Country/Punk’ band. She’s come along ways since ‘Bopalena’ and ‘Hanky Panky’…I tired to find video links for those two songs, but was unsuccessful.
Re: Reassessment of my opinion…
Yeah…a few times I guess. When I was a kid (12 or 13) I used to dislike The Beatles…that changed in a hurry. I also used to despise Punk Rock during its formative years…then around 1977/78 I discovered Eddie & The Hot Rods ‘Teenage Depression’ (about 2 years after its release), and that album is the sole reason why I gave Punk a second chance. After that I was hooked!
BQ: Yes…Greeneyes and I watched the entire show together. We had a laugh when the 4th torch failed to emerge from beneath the stage…otherwise it was a great Opening Ceremony. The lighting and effects were amazing…we especially enjoyed those Killer Whales swimming across the performance area…the blow hole effect was very cool!
The fiddles were very good also…lots of great Canadian talent there for sure. Ashley MacIsaac is an excellent performer…remember this appearance on Conan O’ Brian?

Great question!
I loved Dan Fogelberg until I saw him live. I couldn’t leave the venue fast enough after the concert — in fact, I left during the encore. I thought he took himself far too seriously, to the point where he insisted that the audience be quiet during “Longer” (which was easily his worst song). That really rubbed me the wrong way. There are far better songwriters than Fogelberg was — people who’ve never taken themselves so seriously or insulted their audience that way. A good song will make an audience be quiet and listen (you can hear a pin drop any time John Prine sings “Sam Stone”).
I never bought another Dan Fogelberg record after that night.
BA: No, I didn’t watch the opening ceremony. I’m not a big Olympics fan. k.d. lang has an exceptional voice, however, I’ll say that.
I agree with you on that! Never thought that much of Leonard Cohen either, but I do like one song called Suzanne. It is just so, so sad.

K.D. Lang has a powerful voice and made Hallelujah her own. I liked that a lot.
BQ: Just as Smiley mentioned, we enjoyed most of the Show, though the Opera singer should have been carried away with a straight jacket on. That was terrible.
I loved the whales so much! That was particularly original.
I couldn’t stand Guns n Roses when the Patience EP came out but was amazed ny Appetite for Destruction
I have to admit Aerosmith had to grow on me – It took re-release of Dream On in 1976 for me to start paying attention to them. I went back and listened to the early albums and gradually became a big fan of theirs.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are another one I didn’t care for but I started liking when they released the album Californication.
I wasn’t much of a Who fan until Who’s Next came out and I consider that to be one of the best albums ever made. After hearing it I gave their early work another chance and found myself becoming a big fan.
Some Bands I liked immediately. those include.
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Jethro Tull
Fleetwood Mac
CCR
How about … Like em ….. Hate em …. then Like em again ……. I just don’t know what to do with this flying saucer.
Chilly Peppers, gets that way for me. but I still don’t like certain songs by them.
Now what?
I guess, I got to narrow it down to a song. Most of those will fall into the 5o’s songs; for example; The Great Pretender by the Platters….. aannnnnnnnd… I like it now. But it wasn’t all of a sudden. I don’t got any of those. I can’t imagine that being possible.
ba.
Yes …. liked very much. Lady in the blue dress was *hot*. Also, the hot lady in the blue dress and Brian Adams song with the resonating native American drum beat will stay in my head forever. Visual effects were remarkable.
Apologies …. for not knowing the hot lady in the blue dress.
I don’t like Leonard Cohen {sorry to all his fans, I
I used to think OK Go! was a one hit wonder band, then my band teacher recommended “Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky” and truthfully it’s my favorite rock/pop album this year. It has a great experimental feel to it and doesn’t get old to me.
I’m still a bit glitchy about going into their older stuff though… I probably will but their newest album has so many great songs I enjoyed on it:
“This Too Shall Pass”
“Needing/Getting”
“Last Leaf”
“While You Were Asleep”
There’s a lot more truthfully.
Also… I remember listening to Ani DiFranco A LONG TIME AGO, and never payed her no mind. Today I say she’s a great writer and musician. I told one of my friends this and he comes back with the ‘insult’ (I put the ‘ around it because he was trying to be funny) “Ani DiFranco? Have you turned lesbian?” I laughed… but I still hold my statement that’s she’s a great writer and musician.
Not to mention I heard this and nearly died by greatness:

^^ Spoonfull’s a rapper/poet I listen to and is great for drinking to, then when I saw Ani DiFranco I thought O.O YESSSSSS…..
“With a plastic knife
this bullsh*t city wont half suffice
laughter, something I could capture twice
now that’s a vice that can’t fit in a bottle”
^^ Spoonfull fit well with Ani to me.
:O Nelly Furtado is Canadian? I thought she was like Mexican or something.
