it did for a number of reasons
it made printing easier so that more books could be printed and more people read them
as everyone who had learned how to read could read the novels the style of them changed to have mass appeal instead of just appealing to the few who had the time, money and ability to read (you certainly wouldn’t have had trashy novels like the twilight series written before the Industrial revolution – the market then was much more discerning)
as the industrial revolution progressed people had more and more leisure time to read and wanted something entertaining rather than educational
and as we get nearer the modern day – people seem to have less and less time to sit and read so novels become shorter and trashier
