Anything can do to make dog comfortable with his cough due to enlarged heart?

Our little guy is finally coughing near constantly now due to an enlarged heart and we are looking for any little thing that can help make him comfortable / relax the coughing until it is time to say good-bye to him.

Maybe one of those vaporiser type sprays they sell for people with colds. You can spray them or plug them into the power point and they release menthol type spray that helps

I’m sorry to hear that your little guy is so sick! I think that the best person to ask this question to, would be the vet! If there is anything that can be done, then the vet is the only person who can provide it!

Love, affection and attention, he will love being around you, try to spend a lot of time near him, talk to him, stroke him, and maybe talk to the vet about the cough thing.

    Possibly a diuretic(s) and a cardiac med. for arrhythmia(irregular heart beat),if he has one.Ask your vet.Possibly a steroid or an anti-inflammatory drug,also?

One way you can stop the coughing is by buying a cough suppressant or cough syrup, although you’ll have to ask a veterinarian about which are safe for dogs to take. There are some over-the-counter cough medicines you can buy to help, although you’ll probably have to talk to a veterinarian in order to work out the recommended dosage.

Also you could just speak to a veterinarian and see what they could offer for the cough.

In regards to taking care of it I suggest just a warm place to lie, tending to it’s needs (i.e water, food), even maybe hand-feed if they are willing to eat. Patting, stroking spending time with the dog, to make them feel more comfortable.

This is quite an emotional time so I suggest you spend as much time as you would like with the dog, until it is time for him to pass away. My first puppy (Great Dane) passed away of an enlarged heart when he was 3.

I wish you all the best and am sorry that your puppy has fallen ill.

so sorry about his problem. the fluid is building up causing him to cough so just keep him quiet and plug in a vaporizer to help him breath better and don’t have any strong odors like smoke or perfumes in the same room where he is.u can give him cough suppressents like robitussin max strenght and call yr vet for the right amount to give him, extra moisture in the air will help so u can even put the shower on and let him inhale the steam to help loosen up the mucus.if he continus to gasp for air u might want to say good bye sooner and let him go since struggling for breath is an awfull feeling and my dad passed away with lung cancer and was always gasping for breath and as sad as it is, it was a blessing when he passed away and was out of pain. good luck and the best of luck.

Im not sure what type of food you have him on, but my maltese has heart problems as well….and the vet said that dogs with heart issues also have alot more issues swallowing and they have acid reflux alot. My maltese he goes into these coughing fits, Ive noticed since changing his food to soft mush food that dont have chunks or hard dog food he does alot better with his coughing fits. Try buying canned mush dog food and hopefully it helps a little. Good luck!

See what your vet recommends doing for the poor guy.
